WHAT IS CATNIP?
Catnip, or Nepeta cataria, is a perennial herb native to Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, and parts of China. Catnip can grow to be three feet tall, with small green-brown leaves with saw-toothed edges and flowers that bloom from late spring to autumn. The plant is frequently used in gardens because it is drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and deters mosquitoes. It also attracts butterflies (and of course cats!).
HOW DOES CATNIP AFFECT CATS?
Cats are known to lick, rub, and roll in the catnip product. Depending on the individual cat and the amount consumed, catnip will either make them very excited or much calmer! When cats are stimulated, they will sniff, chew, lick, shake their heads, and rub their chins, cheeks, and bodies. Some cats will actually vocalize, jump, and run around. If your cat is more laid-back, he or she may become docile, drool, and stretch.
The effects of catnip are short-lived and only last 10-15 minutes.
WHERE CAN I BUY CATNIP TOYS?
Since catnip is non-toxic, lasts only a short time, and most cats enjoy it, it’s worth a try to see how your cat responds.
